Stoke on Trent is a city which is located in the central to western part of England. It is in the county of Staffordshire. The boundaries and borders of the county itself is suspect due to it combining Shropshire as well as the moorlands. The population of the area stands at two hundred and fifty thousand and it is said to have decreased over the years. Well over ninety five percent of the population is deemed to be white and three percent being that of South Asian descent.
The name Stoke on Trent comes from the origins of farming and pastures, meeting places etc. Originally the city was a borough but lost this status back in 1973 and then became part of a bigger urban area of the county of Staffordshire. Over the last three to four hundred years the area has been known widely for its pottery manufacturing. This bought about many famous pottery experts and also boosted the coal industry for good measure. It was actually a major centre for coal mining but today like many industries, it went into decline.
Some of the attractions in the area include the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery which has an excellent collection of ceramics and exhibitions. Regent Theatre, Victoria Hall, Dazed Gallery and Air Space are all worthy of a mention. We also have the New Vic Theatre, Odeon Multiplex Cinema, Elizabeth Ford Green Hall, Gladstone Pottery Museum, Wedgewood Museum, Trentham Gardens and the National Nature Reserve. It is also worth mentioning that fifteen miles away we have the famous theme park resort of Alton Towers. Stoke on Trent is under the ST1 postcode district
